🥁🎵🙌 Recently, Fairview Elementary students spent a whole day drumming, chanting, and creating music together thanks to Dancing Drum, a North Carolina Arts Council Teaching Artist program based in Asheville.

Led by musical director Steve Campbell, the School Drum Day brought an exciting, hands-on percussion experience to every grade. Fairview chose the “Drumming Up Character!” focus, which uses rhythm, songs, and teamwork to reinforce themes like fairness, caring, responsibility, and respect. Students rotated through a full circle of drums and percussion instruments, working together to create energetic rhythms while building community, practicing focus, and expressing themselves creatively.

“Drumming is not only about making music- it’s also a medium through which students can work together to build school community, learn to focus in a dynamic environment, and enjoy an energetic and productive outlet for creative self-expression,” Campbell said.

Dancing Drum’s mission is to educate, entertain, and inspire, and the workshops delivered exactly that- an unforgettable day of music-making that kept students smiling, moving, and learning.
