Students walk through a pumpkin patch.

Weaverville Primary School kindergarteners went on a learning adventure at Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard in Hendersonville on Thursday.

Ms. Heather Gast and Ms. Elizabeth Penley brought their students to the farm, where kids learned about apple products and other crops, walked a corn maze, and took a hayride to the orchard to pick their own apples. They tasted different apple varieties, tried apple cider, and took home some delicious apple cider doughnuts. It was a valuable learning experience that connected the kids with nature, nutrition, and their local community. The trip also encouraged sensory exploration as the kindergarteners saw, touched, smelled, and tasted fresh apples right off the tree.

“It's wonderful for the kids to get to see an orchard and understand where apples, pumpkins, and corn come from and how they grow,” Ms. Gast said. “To get to meet real farmers and pick your food right off a tree is such a treat and hands on learning at its finest!”
